FANXY STUDIO: SUNMI (선미) HEROINE (주인공) DANCE COVER

K-pop is a way of life in South Korea. If you ask any middle school girl in this country who her favourite K-pop band is, it will be answered in shouts, tears, and you being forced to watch the idol’s latest music video. On Get Up and Go Girl I thought it would be fun to be a K-pop star for a day! I signed up for not only a dance class, but to also star in my very own dance video. Oh yes, I feel your eye-rolls from here, but my K-pop dreams have finally come true! Heh heh. I found the experience on Airbnb (surprisingly!), and even though dancing is not my strong suit, I knew I would have the best time. After all, it’s about the experience, not perfection (as my mother would say to make me feel better at how uncoordinated I am). Myself and six other ladies (plus our wonderful choreographer, Kim Nyan) danced to SUNMI’s “Heroine”. In the video below you’ll see our sweet little routine plus, I explain in …

WEEKEND TRIP TO CHUNCHEON, SOUTH KOREA

Before I get to Chuncheon, I want to rewind a bit and chat about last month when I went to Seoul for Hera Seoul Fashion Week. My last one, ever. WAH! I am incredibly lucky to have attended four wonderful seasons of SFW, and each time I am amazed by the creatives in this city. I only had time to attend one show and invited my friend Dev to sit front row with me at NOHANT. The mix of prints and textures made me miss spring/summer already, not to mention the designer chose the best looking models in the game. One model from the show stood out the most, Han Hyun-Min. Born and raised in Korea, Han Hyun-Min is ethnically half Nigerian, half Korean. Stunning look kid, eh? I couldn’t imagine the struggle this 16-year-old (YES! 16!) had to/probably still goes through growing up in a homogeneous country. I have no doubt that he is going to make international waves in the fashion industry. This season at SFW I stopped every human who either had glitter on their face …

BIKE RIDING THROUGH SAMNAK RIVERSIDE

‘Tis the season of getting outside and enjoying the heat, and what better way to ring in the sweet summertime than going for a riverside bike ride. My friend Jake and I made our way to Samnak Ecological Park in Busan and rented a bike for ₩3,000 each. We had to give the rental place a piece of ID, which was returned once we gave back the bikes. I read online that foreigners can rent these bikes for free, but turns out it wasn’t true. No biggie though, ONWARDS WE WENT FOR OUR RIVERSIDE ADVENTURE! We had one hour to ride around the area, which is the largest of the four parks located along the Nakdonggang River. We rode pass a plethora of soccer and baseball fields, camp grounds, and even an inline skating rink. The boys in the picture below enthusiastically said hello as I was passing by and couldn’t help but snap a photo, they were just so darn cute! Peddling along the riverside, I forgot I was still in a city. The leisurely ride was a great …

BIRTH CONTROL: MY IUD EXPERIENCE

It’s time for some real talk. Birth control is a personal subject but as women, we need to support, educate, and have conversations about our options. In my latest video on Get Up & Go Girl, I open up to you about my experience of getting an IUD (intrauterine device). Never heard about this alien contraption before? Don’t worry, a lot of women haven’t. Heck, I only discovered it a couple of years ago through a friend and was shocked when I found out almost 160 million women around the world use it. If you have any questions, talk with your doctor or gynecologist because they’re the experts! I’m just the girl who has been through it, and wanted to share with you my experience.

OTTAWA HALF-MARATHON

Last weekend I completed the Ottawa half-marathon in (personal) record time: 2hrs 7mins!! If you remember reading about my first half-marathon in Toronto, I mentioned I’d be heading to our Nation’s Capital to once again run the 21.1K trek. On Saturday morning I ventured to Ottawa all by my lonesome, staying at the Hi-Ottawa Jail Hostel. Let me repeat, I STAYED IN A JAIL HOSTEL! Despite it once being a maximum security institution from 1862 to 1972 and known for its public executions and inhumane conditions, the hostel offered free wi-fi and breakfast so like, who can complain. The night before my race I felt extremely nervous. I paced back and forth in the hostel hallways and walked around the block a few times to calm my nerves. I found it impossible to sit still. When you watch my vlog I’m peppy and excited but to be completely honest, I was terrified. I felt anxious being in Ottawa by myself, sharing a room with 5 strangers (that were supposed to be all girls but, ended up being co-ed..LOL) and I didn’t feel trained …

MY FIRST HALF-MARATHON!

I realize my half-marathon was almost one month ago and I haven’t said a peep about it on my blog. I’M SO SORRY! October and November have been incredibly hectic and for an entire month I’ve been trying to figure out a routine since there were a lot of changes that went on. Needless to say. I’M BACK! For those of you who follow my on Instagram, you know I successfully completed my very first Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon in 2hrs and 14min. 🙂 I wasn’t so much nervous before the race, more anxious to get going. I remember the first couple kilometers I had a constant smile on my face, which may have looked incredibly creepy now that I think about it. I felt happy to be doing something for the first time and to know that this was a challenge I signed myself up for, not knowing what to expect. Looking around at the start of the race, I appreciated the pretty Toronto scenery, the athletes who were all there to complete a common goal, supporters who froze their …

Oh hey – I’m at 15k

My half-marathon is in 35 days. 35 DAYS! Where has the time gone? I thought I’d have forever to train but in just about a month I’ll be running 21k..whether I like it or not. This morning I ran 15k (woo-hoo!) but, as much as I’m celebrating, it certainly wasn’t easy. Since I’m still getting used to the longer distance, I walked for half a kilometer mid-run to catch my breath. When I stopped, dehydration kicked in. My legs felt heavy and mouth got dry. For a brief moment I felt tempted to call someone to pick me up and drive me home (“MAAA CAN YOU COME GET MEEEEE?”). I wasn’t sure if my body could endure an additional 7k, especially without any hydration. To calm myself down, I lifted my arms over my head, closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When my body chilled out, I began running again. The more I motivated myself, the more I kept going. Plus I had “Work Bitch” by Britney Spears on full blast, that helped too. I knew if …

Oh hey – I’m at 8K

Hi friends, My training has been going a tad slow for my upcoming half-marathon, but 8K with a time of 47 minutes isn’t terrible. It’s not the worst, but I certainly know I can do better. On Saturday I attempted to run 8K but woke up SUPER hungry and ate to my hearts content and (like the smart person I am in the morning), went for the run immediately after. I went maybe 3K, felt sick, turned around and walked home. Rookie mistake. This morning I learnt from my mistake and had a small bowl of cereal, a glass of water and ventured back out there. The run this morning was SO MUCH BETTER! I felt refreshed and the weather was perfect (cloudy with a bit of precipitation – just the way I like it). I find between 5K-6K is the hardest for me. That’s the time when my feet start to hurt and my breathing becomes heavier. Once I get past 6K, I usually get a good pace going and it’s smooth sailing from there. Many …

Color Me Rad 2014

Katie, Nicole and I participated in the “Color Me Rad” 5k run on Saturday! Here are the top moments of the day: Got dazzled up in our RAD gear. Tattoos and sunglasses were included in our packs. Nicole provided the knee-high socks, I made us all headbands and Katie whipped up some protein pancakes that morning – they were deeeelicious! Warmed up before the race with a little bit of zumba. Hilariously tripped over each other because we couldn’t see from the amount of chalk in our eyes. Also, can we acknowledge my glorious fanny pack? Pretty sure it was my dad’s in the 80’s. The colour stations were the best part. Casually got boxes of purple, blue and orange chalk poured over us as we ran by. Was it chalk? Baking powder with colour maybe? All I know is that it stained my tank top, even after two washes. #WorthIt WE FINISHED THE RACE! Running 5k was not so bad, we certainly could’ve kept going. Good job team! I don’t know who the person was who …

Athletic Banquet 2013

It feels bittersweet to have attended my final UTSC Athletic Banquet. I’ve learned so much from my coaches and teammates over the past four years and I’m sad I’ll never lace up my skates or ride those big yellow buses to games anymore. Thanks to everyone who made my UTSC athletic experience unforgettable. To my soccer girls, you were the first team I’ve joined at UTSC and I’m SO glad I did. I’m proud to have played on a team that stopped at nothing to win a championship. You girls are passionate and energetic and it makes me proud to have played with you all (alumni included). Keep rookie night alive and keep beating UTM. To my hockey girls, thank you for all the hilarious locker room talks and eventful late night practices. We may have not won a season or a tournament, but we had the tenacity every team who played us envied. Never give up! To my hockey guys, you’re all goons. Thank you for understanding that I need to blast and dance to Keith Urban …

UTSC women’s soccer team – champions

I can’t believe it. My last UTSC soccer game and I not only scored twice, but my team won the CHAMPIONSHIPS! It’s an unreal, bittersweet feeling. The game ended with the final score of 3-1. We played against our rivals UTM and throughout the entire game I couldn’t stop pacing. My adrenaline was rushing, heart was pumping, and palms were sweating because I didn’t want my last soccer game at UTSC to be a disappointment. During the game, there seemed to be an abundance of pushing, shoving, fouls, penalty kicks, and a few curse words being thrown every now and again. Even though my body was aching from an all-day hockey tournament the day before, I was determined to not leave the field until I was wheezing and on the verge of fainting. We go hard in Scarborough. If this team has taught me anything throughout the past four years, it’s determination, tenacity, and knowing you’re never alone – on or off the field. I can’t even begin to explain the friendships I’ve developed on this team. Whether these girls calmed me down on the field, …
