One Good Thing: May 2014

Hey everyone! In the beginning of May I decided I was going to write ONE thing each day that made me smile. From this little project I wanted to remind myself that even though I have a daily routine, there are tiny gestures to make me appreciate the unique characteristics of each day. Gestures as simple as receiving a text asking how my day is going or a friend offering to make me dinner after a long day at work. It made me stop and realize that it doesn’t take a ton of money or  well-thought out plan to brighten someone’s day. It’s the little things people, they add up. MAY 1 – Was told I was allowed to take a cute summer dress home from work. 2 – Melissa went out of her way to deliver a large reusable bag for me to carry five boxes of shoes home. 3 – Katie came over and made me laugh so hard I cried. 4 – Had time to make a toasted avocado sandwich with mixed fruit and bacon on the side. …

6 Lessons My Mother Has Taught Me

Happy Mother’s Day! Currently Momma Moy is enjoying her Sunday by taking photos of cherry blossoms at High Park, buying fabric for a dress she’s making and will probably go grocery shopping to make a stew and an apple pie for tonight (supermom status). While she’s out I have decided to dedicate this lovely Mother’s Day post to her. If you’ve ever met Momma Moy, you know she’s a pretty splendid human being. From the same person who laughs at her own jokes and gets emotionally attached to every contestant on American Idol, here are the top SIX lessons I have learned from Julie Moy. 1. You want something? Go get it yourself Mom: Do you want a sandwich? Me: Yes! Mom: Go make it yourself. Me: Did you just ask if I wanted to make myself a sandwich? Mom: I just bought all the ingredients, you know where they are. In that moment I laughed and lovingly sighed “oh mother…”, but in retrospect I noticed throughout my entire life my mom has taught me the value of …

Picture You, Picture Me

These portraits by Emer Gillespie with her daughter Laoisha are so sweet. The series involves the two setting a camera and taking photos of each other in a variety of settings according to what interests Laoisha at the time. My future daughter best be ready because her and I will constantly be doing creative projects like this.

Working in the city & fancy tea parties

Hellloooo! It’s a beautiful Saturday afternoon and my window is cracked slightly to let the gentle Spring breeze dance throughout my room, which, by the way, further enhances my Oceanside wallflower from Bath & Body Works (forever obsessed). It’s been awhile since we’ve last talked so grab yourself a nice cup of tea and a healthy snack because you and I haven’t caught up in a few weeks! What’s new with you? 🙂 First off let me mention my OBSESSION with listening to Dan & Shay. The country-pop duo have been on replay for two weeks with no signs of slowing down. “Parking Break” has been one of my favourite songs and if you’re into this music, you are my people. Ok, let’s start off with last month when I went to Skyzone for my friend Katie’s birthday. Skyzone is an indoor trampoline park where they have pits of foam you can flip into, tons of trampoline walls you can bounce off of and a handful of arenas for trampoline dodgeball (the reason why we went). I think the park is meant for …

MY SUMMER GOALS 2014!

My favourite day of the year is finally here…..THE DAY I POST MY LIST OF SUMMER GOALS! *insert happy dance* Yes spring has just begun, but summer for me starts in May and that is less than a month away. I’m BEYOND winter and cold weather (who in Toronto isn’t) and I’ve been patiently awaiting tan lines, flip flops and the smell of freshly cut grass. If you want to see my 2013 summer goals, click HERE! If you want to know why I epically failed at completing them, click HERE! THIS SUMMER I AM DETERMINED TO SCRATCH EVERYTHING OFF BY SEPTEMBER (I say this every year, but I promise I’ll actually do it). So my beautiful friends, stay tuned and let’s go on this little summer journey together, shall we? 🙂 JESSICA’S SUMMER GOALS 2014!  1. Go to an Asian grocery store and buy a cart full of unknown food, then haul it. 2. Make an ultimate summer playlist. 3. Watch an entire series of a TV show I’ve never seen before. 4. Volunteer. 5. Complete writing my …

101 ways to ditch your friends

I’ve been watching Superfruit videos ALL DAY! Scott and Mitch (from the acapella group Pentatonix) are actually the funniest people on the planet. Their “101 ways to ditch your friends” was the first video I saw of theirs and it made me laugh out loud (obnoxiously) at 2 a.m. in a quiet house full of sleeping family members. I have to admit, I’ve used each of the excuses they mentioned at least once in my life, but especially these ones: “I’m in Croatia.” “I found land elves in my backyard and I must map their territory.” “I have to recharge my crystals.”

My future pet

If I lived in a perfect world, I’d have my own studio apartment in New York City with a sweet little sphynx cat named Cleopatra. I’d dress her up in designer cardigans and we’d be best friends. If you think she’s ugly, I will be re-evaluating our friendship.

Be gutsy and go for it

Yesterday I had a hot chocolate date at Boxcar Social with Charise from Kaeru Communications. Nothing is more motivating than getting fantastic career and life advice from someone who is naturally ambitious and driven. The biggest lesson I learned from talking to Charise was to keep working hard, be social and if you don’t like what you’re doing, change it. We both work from home and agree that some days can be less motivating since you don’t have a co-worker to talk to or it can feel like a drag when you stay in your pyjamas until 3pm. Charise says to break up your day and keep busy, whether it being meeting with clients, coffee dates or going for a workout. Always have something to do. The best piece of advice I received from her? If you want to do something, be gutsy and go for it. Don’t let anyone or anything stop you.

Cat and house sitting

My aunt and uncle went on vacation to the States for 10 days, leaving me in charge of their humble abode and Sniffy, their cat. In only a couple days I nearly lit the house on fire, came close to flooding the entire washroom and forgot to feed Sniffs the first morning I was here (he was NOT pleased with me for the rest of the day). Rest assured, everything is still intact! I’m having a very relaxing Saturday filled with writing, reading, hot lemon water and Miranda Lambert’s “Automatic” on repeat. I’m excited for tomorrow night since my friends Sam and Katie are coming over! We’re getting dressed up and going out (probably to a nice Greek restaurant). FINALLY, human interaction. It’s been kind of lonely being here by myself. The cat can only entertain me for so long. Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂

Quality over quantity

Life is about new experiences and forming great relationships. It’s about the people who enter your life and, unfortunately, it is also about the people who leave it. I believe everyone you meet, you meet for a reason. Whether they gave you faith, provided a home, broke your heart or made you smile – you can write at least ONE lesson every person in your life has taught you. Those who aren’t in mine anymore, they’ve taught me the most important lesson. It’s in that moment when you both realize your friendship or relationship is over. Suddenly, whether ending in good or bad terms, all the memories you’ve ever had together come rushing back from when you were both happy and felt like you’d have forever. Then you realize, you don’t. As cliche as it sounds, every ending has a new beginning. There’s an entire world you haven’t yet met. Saying good-bye will always be hard, but as sappy as it sounds, no one can take away the memories you had together. I always believe …

The beauty of being awkward

Think back to all the awkward situations, photos or conversations you’ve ever had in your life, the ones that make you cringe from sheer embarrassment or smile from a sentimental, unexpected moment. Think back to a successful date with someone you genuinely care about. That moment before you both go in for that first kiss. You smile, hesitate and (to dispel the awkward) you just go for it. The feeling of excitement and anticipation is a small part of life we often take for granted. Think back to when you were a teenager (or twenties, or thirties or anytime in your life you felt lost). The awkwardness of discovering who you are and what you want to do with your life. You stumble, fall and have no fucking idea what you’re doing. As awkward as it gets when you’re going through the motions, it’s those days of fumbling and picking yourself back up you truly discover where you’re meant to be. Being awkward makes you human. It makes life interesting. Good or bad, it keeps us on the …

This is how my week went

My friend Katie and I bought cute friendship necklaces from Target because everything we talk about is irrelephant…..get it. But also because they symbolize good luck and we both desperately need that in our lives. I took a lovely morning stroll in Toronto. Saw Goldroom perform at Wrongbar. Not sure who he is? Check out his songs below! Embrace – Goldroom Only You Can Show Me – Goldroom Saw some pretty cool graffiti. Had a craving for a ginger molasses cookie from Starbucks, so obviously…this happened… Like any of these photos? ALL can be seen on my Instagram! Add me and let’s be friends! 🙂 instagram.com/jessica_moy
