I have no concept of failure

I have no concept of failure. I never have. A 4-year-old Meghan would have told you the same thing I tell you today, ‘I am going to be an actress.’ Not an ounce of uncertainty to my voice. No ‘possibly’ or ‘if’ or a lukewarm ‘maybe.’ The word ‘if’ is toxic. I never let it slip through my tounge because I set my own limitations and if I tell myself ‘if’ then I’m succumbing to the possibility that I don’t have what it takes. That I am doubting my very self. But we’re taught on knees of kindergarden teachers that the sky wasn’t the limit for Jack and the Bean stock, so why should it be mine?

SEX AND THE CITY BY CANDACE BUSHNELL

First off, the TV show is MUCH better than the book in terms of character development, extended story lines and basically…..everything else. If you live under a rock or are uncultured, “Sex and the City” mainly focuses on Carrie (a writer) and her experiences with love in the Big Apple.

sex city

What I admired was how relatable the chapters were in terms of the trials and tribulations Carrie had to face. Within the first few pages she learns, “relationships in New York is all about detachment.” Much like real life, if a young man lives in the city and is incredibly handsome/successful he is most likely not looking for a serious relationship. Women make the mistake of falling hard for these types, which often lead to a broken heart, bottomless pits of wine and a dash of hostile feelings. I agree with Carrie’s idea of detachment, especially when you are in your early twenties. I’m not saying you should NEVER fall in love when you’re young but living in a big city when you’re 22, 23, 24 years old, you’re still a kid. More often than not you’re going to change significantly within those years (your idea of love, needs, tastes, personality, etc). A relationship will often fail due to growing apart. Again, I’m not saying all relationships end for this reason but from experience though myself and friends, that’s what typically happens.

“We were hard and proud of it and it hadn’t been easy to get to this point – this place of complete independence…It had taken hard work, loneliness, and the realization that, since there might never be anyone there for you, you had to take care of yourself in every sense of the word.”

Agree or disagree but detachment is an important lesson to learn when you’re single in your 20’s. You should never settle or dedicate your life to someone who won’t be able to grow with you. If your gut says “this guy is a bad idea,” most likely right. I read once how “a man is never too busy to call a woman they are really into. ‘Busy’ is another word for ‘asshole.’ ‘Asshole’ is another word for the guy you’re dating.” If he’s choosing to not make a simple effort that would put your mind at ease, then he’s not worth it. *insert sassy triple snap here*

The book also discussed taboo subjects such as swingers, threesomes, and cheating. I’ll leave that up for you to read and reflect. All I’ll just say is that I don’t know if I have been educated or corrupted on these subjects through this novel.

Of course, it wouldn’t be “Sex and the City” without the relationship between Carrie and Mr. Big. It’s an emotional roller coaster (wouldn’t be their love if it wasn’t). I was reading this book while on the train, coming home from a long, stressful day. Coincidentally in the chapter I was reading that Carrie had the same mind-set as myself (worrying about the future, etc). When she got home, Carrie saw that Mr. Big sent her flowers and a card saying, “Everything will be ok. Love, Mr. Big.” I thought the gesture was so sweet. Gosh, I want someone to send me flowers! Since that probably won’t happen in the foreseeable future, I imagined being Carrie for a brief 30 seconds and it instantly made me feel better. Thanks Big.

(SPOILER ALERT BELOW!)

By the end of the book, Carrie and Mr. Big fought and made-up about a zillion times over love, marriage, and their future together. In the epilogue Bushnell concludes, “Mr. Big is happily married. Carrie is happily single.” Ohhh, such a dramatic ending. Sad, but it’s honest and realistic. If you’re looking for a girly poolside read (quite like Cosmo but in novel form) then I recommend it.

Overall, I’d give this book a solid 5.9/10.

101 ways to ditch your friends

I’ve been watching Superfruit videos ALL DAY! Scott and Mitch (from the acapella group Pentatonix) are actually the funniest people on the planet. Their “101 ways to ditch your friends” was the first video I saw of theirs and it made me laugh out loud (obnoxiously) at 2 a.m. in a quiet house full of sleeping family members.

I have to admit, I’ve used each of the excuses they mentioned at least once in my life, but especially these ones:

“I’m in Croatia.”

“I found land elves in my backyard and I must map their territory.”

“I have to recharge my crystals.”

My future pet

If I lived in a perfect world, I’d have my own studio apartment in New York City with a sweet little sphynx cat named Cleopatra. I’d dress her up in designer cardigans and we’d be best friends.

If you think she’s ugly, I will be re-evaluating our friendship.

Bobbi Brown & Girl Rising’s Global Campaign

Bobbi Brown & Girl Rising have teamed together for International Women’s Day (March 8) to bring awareness and raise money for girls around the world who don’t have access to an education. If you’re a student, think about how lucky you are. Before you complain about studying for tests or waking up super early for class, know that 65 million girls around the world do not attend school because a) they can’t afford it or b) 14 million of those girls are under 18 and will be married this year. When girls marry, their education almost always comes to an end.

I am very passionate about “girl power” (thanks to the Spice Girls for instilling that trait into 7 year-old me) and want to make my readers aware of Girl Rising’s Global Campaign. If you want to help, Bobbi Brown has released a mascara called “Pretty Powerful Mascara” and all proceeds ($25) will go toward Girl Rising to help educate a girl so she can be independent and have a more prosperous future.

Tips for finding the perfect jean for your body type

Most of us women can attest to the fact that when it comes to our jeans, we wear one or two favourites and ignore the rest in our closets (guilty). Jeans are uniquely made to fit and flatter every body shape, so don’t be dropping serious cash on a pair of you’ll only wear once (or not at all). Here are my tips on finding that perfect pair:

Curvy?
For the curvier woman, a higher rise will tighten up the tummy and elongate your legs. Go for a darker wash such as a solid navy or black. These hues will keep everything streamlined. Look for jeans such as the Kimmie Contour Bootcut from 7 For All Mankind.

Pear shaped?
You carry more weight on your hips and thighs, but a mid-rise jean will slim it all down and elongate those legs. Also, look for bigger back pockets such as the Brooke jeans from J Brand since they will make your behind look smaller.

Hourglass?
To show off your figure, go for a mid-rise to flatter your smaller waist. A wide legged jean will be the most flattering since it will not only make your legs look slimmer, but create a smooth line from your waist down. A great example is the Fiona Flare by Paige Premium Denim.

Petite?
Girl, don’t ever let jeans drag on the floor. A skinny jean will be your best bet if you need to hem, plus the fit will stretch you out. Jeans that hit right at the ankle are also flattering on shorter women since it will give the illusion of longer legs. Look for jeans such as the Moto Mid Stone Leigh Jeans from TopShop.

Tall?
Bootcut or skinny jeans are the most flattering on tall, slender women. If you don’t want your legs to be the main attraction, find jeans with fading such as the Grupee jean from Diesel. This will give draw attention away from your leg length.

Athletic?
A slightly higher waist will make muscular legs will look long and lean. For athletic women, a bootcut with a wide leg will fit your thighs nicely, lengthen your legs and give your figure a more feminine silhouette. Look for jeans such the Lolita Boot from Lucky Brand.

Be gutsy and go for it

Yesterday I had a hot chocolate date at Boxcar Social with Charise from Kaeru Communications. Nothing is more motivating than getting fantastic career and life advice from someone who is naturally ambitious and driven.

The biggest lesson I learned from talking to Charise was to keep working hard, be social and if you don’t like what you’re doing, change it. We both work from home and agree that some days can be less motivating since you don’t have a co-worker to talk to or it can feel like a drag when you stay in your pyjamas until 3pm. Charise says to break up your day and keep busy, whether it being meeting with clients, coffee dates or going for a workout. Always have something to do.

The best piece of advice I received from her? If you want to do something, be gutsy and go for it. Don’t let anyone or anything stop you.

Spring is sooo InStyle

InStyle’s March 2014 cover with Nicole Kidman is STUNNING! She looks effortlessly beautiful in Christian Dior and the mix of yellow, coral pink and baby blue reminds me of a fresh Spring day. Sighhhhh. I certainly have a case of the winter blues, so this cover is making me extremely happy right now.  Will definitely have to pick up a copy tomorrow.

Cat and house sitting

My aunt and uncle went on vacation to the States for 10 days, leaving me in charge of their humble abode and Sniffy, their cat. In only a couple days I nearly lit the house on fire, came close to flooding the entire washroom and forgot to feed Sniffs the first morning I was here (he was NOT pleased with me for the rest of the day).

Rest assured, everything is still intact! I’m having a very relaxing Saturday filled with writing, reading, hot lemon water and Miranda Lambert’s “Automatic” on repeat. I’m excited for tomorrow night since my friends Sam and Katie are coming over! We’re getting dressed up and going out (probably to a nice Greek restaurant). FINALLY, human interaction. It’s been kind of lonely being here by myself. The cat can only entertain me for so long.

Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂
