FLEETING MOMENTS

We are composed, defined and captivated by fleeting moments. Holding onto nights, places and feelings we wish we could stash in a locket and open up from time to time, only to reminisce about that first glance or first conversation. These moments flash before our eyes. It seems selfish to want something to last for more than the time we are given. To be able to pause and soak in the incredible feelings that startle and amaze you. The familiarity of smells and sights. Listen to your senses, be in the moment and acknowledge when your heart feels happy. Fleeting moments come and go, just like memories and the people you meet. See, feel, touch, catch and release. The wonders of our life can be documented with pictures and video but the best memories are stored in a place where every so often, typically in quiet moments, you remember what it’s like to love and be loved. It’s yours to capture, every fleeting moment.

I SHOULD BE FOLDING LAUNDRY

Hey friends! It is 10:35PM, which means it’s well past my bedtime. I should’ve been tucked in awhile ago but I have yet to shower, need to finish work that’s due in the morning (haven’t started) and my unfolded laundry has been staring at me in judgement for an hour now. At least it’s clean. Small win. Needless to say, I’ve been busy. I stopped daily vlogs last week because I was up in my neck with dozens of projects, tasks and events I had to manage and (of course) they were all due within days of each other. The above photo is me at our Triumph event! That was a fun day, but I barely had time to eat that week, which is terrible and horrifying because we all know when I was stressed and forget to eat last time, this happened: My shing-a-ling experience Don’t worry! I’m doing fine, but I wanted to step back from the busy state that is my life and just start writing. I wrote in my journal a couple hours ago …

EXPECTATIONS OF BEAUTY

I recently went on a date a man who said women need to wear makeup in order to be beautiful. Thought he was kidding, until we went out and wouldn’t even look at me because I didn’t reach his ‘expectations.’ His ‘expectations’ was for me to resemble the 1,258 air-brushed women in bikinis he follows on Instagram. His ‘expectations’ was for me to wear tight dresses, 6-inch heels, have tanned skin, and spend time on my appearance as to not embarrass him. He concluded because I was a tomboy, his ridiculous standard of beauty could never be reached. I play sports, wear loose t-shirts bought at the men’s section of H&M and am not afraid to get a little dirt in my hair and you know what? I am damn beautiful, because beauty is defined by respecting your body, kindness, intelligence, and strength NOT pencil skirts, heels, and a heavy hand of makeup. I know his words and actions had nothing to do with me, and everything to do with his own insecurities. To all of the …

MY SUMMER GOALS 2015

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!! Oh yes, the day I list my SUMMM-AHH GOALS has arrived (hold for cheers and applause). This year is going to be a little different than in the past, but before I explain why, catch yourself up and on last years list by clicking HERE. Then, read how I accomplished all but ONE GOAL (still bitter about it) by clicking HERE. This summer, I have cut my list in half because homegirl needs a wee more time to accomplish two goals that are going to be kept hush hush, for now. All I will say is they both coincide with each other and if completed will (PLOT TWIST) completely change my life. Casual, I know. If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, they won’t surprise you. If you have spoken to me in person for more than five minutes in the past two years, you already know. That is all I will reveal. Don’t hate me. The rest of you will find out soon. Promise. 🙂 JESSICA’S SUMMER GOALS 2015! …

BREAKFAST LECTURES & I GO TO AMERICA

Hi friends, What time is it? Time for an exciting life update (woooooo-zz). I added the z’s at the end because I’m exhausted, and right when this post goes up I’ll be tucking myself warmly into bed. LEGGO! Last week I went to CreativeMornings at the offices of Shopify. CreativeMornings are breakfast lectures by creatives, for creatives, where you listen to a speaker discuss career advice and valuable life lessons they have learned to get them where they are today. I had the privilege of listening to Jacqui Oakley, a freelance illustrator who spoke of fear, anxiety and how to not let it consume you/steps to incorporating it into your daily life. Sometimes, you can’t help feeling scared or anxious and most of the time it can attack you unexpectedly. Oakley broke down how she dealt with moving to different countries when she was younger, her artwork being constantly judged and being confused about what to do next when it comes to progressing in her career. The best advice she gave was the steps to take when you’re anxious about starting a …

LA MERCERIA & TRUSTING YOUR INSTINCTS

Last week my friend Vanessa and I went to La Merceria, an Argentinean cafe in Toronto, walkable from my work and a hidden gem on Adelaide St W. We often meet to catch up and indulge ourselves with fancy feasts, coffees and desserts around the city – something we both thoroughly enjoy. At the corner of the cafe, we sat down beside the tall window facing the snowy street and chatted about our day, the projects we had going on, our love/hate with Instagram, etc. The usual. We sipped Nutella lattes and picked at our chicken empanadas, rambling on about “being a young adult” and how it’s been more challenging than rewarding. We are both unaware of what’s considered “normal” and laughed at our personal trials and tribulations, because laughing prevents us from having mental breakdowns in public. I suppose no one has it fully figured out. Not you, not me, not the most perfect person you can think of – nope, zilch, nadda. Vanessa and I agreed that we’d rather be lost and confused (it makes for a better TV …

WHAT I DID ON VALENTINE’S DAY

I know you curious kittens are wondering what I did on the day of love, and I’m going to tell you in bullet points because, list formats are just how my brain works sometimes. What I did on Valentine’s Day: – Woke up. Freezing. I mean, look at my view right now. Everything is frozen. #ExtremeWeatherWarning #ElsaWasHere – Had breakfast. Frosted Mini-Wheats to be exact. With orange juice. – Went to soccer. Learned “more” and “learn” in sign language. I recently started coaching all-abilities soccer (kids and teens under 15) and before each practice we learn 2-3 signs since some of our athletes are unable to communicate verbally. It’s pretty cool, and the athletes are awesome. After practice the organization handed out VDay themed stamps, stickers and pencils for the kids but, I obviously partook. – Went to Tim’s and grabbed a coffee. Won a FREE coffee from Roll-Up-The-Rim. – Drove home, took a shower. – I don’t know whether it was because I had a busy week, lack of sleep or the weather being miserable (-40C to …

I’m still here!

Woah nelly, I just realized I haven’t written a post at all in 2015. Checking in to tell you I’m still around! To give you a quick run down of what I’ve been up to – I’ve been super busy at work, I’m freelancing every night when I get home (speaking of which, I have a couple pretty neat articles to share with you soon, one involving almost losing my eye), every Saturday I’ve been up early to coach soccer to cute little kiddies, and any spare moment I have I’m either watching re-runs of Friends (bless Netflix) or attempting to have a social life, which usually entails me going over to a friends house, stealing their food, watching more Friends then passing out. Party. Animal. Despite my full plate, not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for what I have and for the supportive people in my life. If I haven’t responded to you, know I read all your comments, emails, tweets, etc – and even if you’re just saying hello, it …

The great shower debacle

Hey everyone! I haven’t done a rant post in awhile. Gosh, I miss it. I miss writing and going on streams of consciousness. You know what? I’ll do on one now. Not sure where this will go, but we’ll find out together! I’m currently in my bed, listening to John Mayer at 11:26PM debating whether to shower tonight or in the morning. If I shower tonight I have to fully blow-dry my hair which takes a good 25 minutes, or I can shower in the morning but I’ll have to wake up an hour earlier, not to mention it’s FREEZING in the AM. Or, I can shower tonight and go to bed with my hair semi-wet, but if I do that I have to straighten it in the morning or else it will be a disheveled mess. The problem with that is, I usually forget if I unplugged my straightener while on my way to work and have to text my brother to check. It’s an uncomfortable feeling wondering if your house is burning down or not, you …
