Infinite Possibilities

Last night, my friend Katie and I shared the hammock in my backyard as we gazed upon tiny flashing lights from soaring airplanes above.

“Where do you think that plane is going?”

“Bermuda, probably.”

We laughed and continued to point out other airplanes passing by. We guessed which exotic locations they were off to and felt jealous of the adventures those passengers were about to embark on, or stories others have as they fly back home.

IMG_6061

“Do you ever think about how small we are?”

“What do you mean?”

“We live on this earth, we work, get married, retire and then we die. That’s it. We just, die.”

“Yeah. I do think about that, a lot actually. It makes me want to get up and go places, do something before life just..ends.”

“If you were to reincarnate, what would you want to be?”

“An otter. Or a really pretty Christmas tree.”

Katie and I laughed, mostly at how long we held that conversation without cracking a joke.

IMG_6044

As our hammock gently rocked, the smell of mid-summer dew from freshly cut grass filled our senses and the soft night breeze brushed against our skin. I can hear both our breathing become heavy as we unintentionally fell asleep.

My eyes opened for a moment and looked back up at the airplanes still flying above. I started to wonder if I’ll ever have the opportunity to travel again. Wondered when’s the next time I’ll feel something more than just the same-ol-same. I thought, ‘if I died tomorrow, what have I done that someone will remember..’

All the significant moments in my life raced through my brain. They seem like a big deal now, but in 50 years, how important will it all REALLY be..

It made me feel small, hopeless. Like a little ant in a gigantic, infinite universe.

Katie moved her leg on top of mine, I swung the hammock to wake her.

“Do you ever think where the universe stops? It has to end somewhere, right? Nothing can be infinite.”

“I think it’s just how our brain works, we can’t fathom infinity,” she mumbled.

She studied Psychology so, apparently she’s an expert on how the human brain functions. 😉

IMG_6062

We can’t process the end of the universe the same reason we can’t process the idea of your life ending and realizing that 70, 80 or 90 years of is all we have to live.

Life is short and I feel like I still haven’t seen many places or gotten to know many people. I think that’s what scares me; realizing I haven’t done or said anything significant to be worthy of remembering. I may not be making much money nor changing lives on a daily basis and even if I’m not remembered, I hope to be happy, successful, have the ability to fall in love, create a family and travel in-between.

A million different little thoughts continued to race through my mind as I rocked the hammock. I glanced down at Katie who was laying beside my feet and suddenly paused. I looked back up at the sky to watch those stupid little airplanes soar above, as if they were shooting stars wishing that one day, I’ll be up there starting my own adventure.

I buried my head back into the hammock, shut my eyes and fell asleep, only to continue thinking about infinite possibilities.

Footlogix Foot Deodorant

I know I’m not the only one who’s ever taken their flats off after a long day of work and noticed a slight stench coming from the shoe area.

You know exactly what I’m talking about.

It’s summer, you’re barely ever wearing socks so feet are bound to get a little sweaty. As a result, it’s perfectly normal for them to not smell like jasmine cherry blossoms or your mom’s freshly baked cookies. Of course, you can try remedies such as sprinkling baby powder or trying to hide the stench with strongly scented lotions, but might I suggest something meant for situations such as this?

Footlogix Foot Deodorant Spray ($19).

IMG_5701

I’ve been carrying this sucker EVERYWHERE with me this summer. It’s compact to fit in my purse and whenever I need a nice refreshment I take it out, spritz it all over my feet and the spray instantly kills nasty odour-causing bacteria. The scent is minty since it’s formulated with tea-tree oil, but what I love the most is how it leaves my feet cooled and refreshed. Definitely a summer staple.

Footlogix also has other varieties of sprays such as Cracked Heel Formula, Shoe Deodorant and an Anti-Fungal Toe Tincture (which sounds both disgusting and necessary).

All Footlogix products ship FREE within Canada on Nail Polish Canada!

Oh hey – I’m at 8K

Hi friends,

My training has been going a tad slow for my upcoming half-marathon, but 8K with a time of 47 minutes isn’t terrible. It’s not the worst, but I certainly know I can do better.

On Saturday I attempted to run 8K but woke up SUPER hungry and ate to my hearts content and (like the smart person I am in the morning), went for the run immediately after. I went maybe 3K, felt sick, turned around and walked home.

Rookie mistake.

This morning I learnt from my mistake and had a small bowl of cereal, a glass of water and ventured back out there. The run this morning was SO MUCH BETTER! I felt refreshed and the weather was perfect (cloudy with a bit of precipitation – just the way I like it).

I find between 5K-6K is the hardest for me. That’s the time when my feet start to hurt and my breathing becomes heavier. Once I get past 6K, I usually get a good pace going and it’s smooth sailing from there. Many times I’ve walked between 5K-6K, but I’ve been pushing myself to keep going and to get past the aches and pains. If there’s one piece of advice every coach taught me growing up is that being active is all about attitude. If you tell yourself you’re tired, you’re going to burn out. If you tell yourself to endure the pain, maybe even tempt yourself with food for when you get back home (works for me), you’ll feel motivated to reach your end goal.

I now understand why people LOVE running. When I get into my zone and set my pace, I get an invigorating feeling that takes over – maybe it has something to do with adrenaline? Endorphins? Either way, I like it, I like it a lot.

Next weekend I’m going for 10K, which is basically half of a half-marathon. Will let you know how that goes. Thank you all again for the continued support, it truly means the world to me! 🙂

This is how I feel…

…when I walk outside to discover it’s cold and raining. Does summer not know it’s July? If I see snow before September rolls around, I’m moving to Death Valley, California (which, upon Googling, is the hottest place on earth and currently 46°C – TAKE ME THERE).

Summer List Update – 2014

Hiii!

I hope you’re all well and enjoying your sum-sum-summah! Finally, I have found some time to update you on my summer to-do list (we’re halfway there people). I’m a tad sleepy this morning since my family and I went on a rafting trip in Paris, Ontario yesterday for 6 hours – twas a lovely time with great company and perfect weather.

Without further ado, here is my update!

JESSICA’S SUMMER GOALS 2014 – click HERE for full list.

2. Make an ultimate summer playlist.

Pshhh, easy. Click HERE for playlist!

4. Volunteer.

Packed lunches at the OXOMillionMeals event – one million meals for one million people across North America! I even ran into supermodels like Stacey McKenzie (she’s like, so gorg).

6. Join a fitness class.

Since I’m training for my half-marathon in October, I’ve concluded THAT is my fitness class because..I make the rules here. Also, I want to thank everyone who has given me words of encouragement and helpful tips on how to properly prepare for it. 🙂

8. Participate in the “Color Me Rad” 5K run.

Heck ya! Read about this experience by clicking HERE!

9. Buy a piñata.

The best day of my summer thus far was when I bought Richard, the piñata.

Screen Shot 2014-07-06 at 11.41.08 AM

11. Go see live theatre.

Melissa and I saw “Vicious Bitches” at Buddies in Bad Time Theatre last month. Sharron Matthews and Gavin Crawford were HILARIOUS, both amazingly talented Canadian performers. Even though most of the jokes were about gay culture and at times way over my head, I was still thoroughly entertained by their monologues, songs and improv – watching them made me miss performing so, so much.

12. Buy an ugly oversized cat t-shirt and do a photo shoot.

I’ve also adjusted this goal. See HERE for results. Cheetah print..cat t-shirt, same thing. COUNTING IT!

13. Buy $50 worth of jewelry at Forever 21.

Instead of Forever 21, spent $20 on rings at H&M and a cute bralette at Urban Outfitters.

I’ve completed 8/20 goals thus far. It’s still a work in progress but I think I can at least complete 19/20 by September! The last goal will be a bit tricky/impossible, but life has a way of surprising me as of late so, who knows what can happen.

Do you ever think that one morning you will wake up like it’s a regular day, and then someone could call you with news that can change your life forever? I do. Maybe it’s just me wishful thinking. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Until then, I’ll keep dreaming.

Hope you all have a nice rest of the weekend! 🙂

ANGEL WING SPLASH PATTERN BY RICHARD VAN CAMP

Angel Wing Splash Pattern is a collection of short stories for dreamers, believers and readers who want a raw look into a corner of Canada that is often over-looked: Contemporary Native life. Each story within the book is only a few pages long (the entire book itself is only 110 pages), but I find Van Camp’s writing so profound and thought-provoking that a few pages is all you need. Quality over quantity. The way Van Camp lures you into the heat of his characters and the way he makes your mind wander about sex, love, compassion and forgiveness is.. well.. it’s flippin’ beautiful.

angel_wing_splash_pattern

One of my favourite stories is called My Fifth Step and ’till this day no story, ever, has made me feel so much emotion. I don’t know how to properly describe it because saying it made me “feel” doesn’t attest to the fact how meaningful this story truly is to me. It made me re-think how I should treat other people, the importance of being in the moment and how to forgive and move on. I highly recommend the read for anyone who’s ever had their heart broken and looking for added direction.

The fifth step in an AA program is to contact someone you hurt. However, you are not allowed to contact the person if you’re going to put them in harms way. So, in the short story, a man wrote a letter for his ex who he cannot contact because she is in a relationship with another man. As a result, he wrote this letter to her in hopes that one day, she will find it.

He makes you laugh with cute, quirky memories from their relationship, he makes you cry with the acceptance of his fate and how he will always cherish every moment they had together and at the end he concludes with this tearjerker..

“I miss your love and friendship. Walk in beauty.”

Lavish picnic, upcoming project & half-marathon training

Hi all,

Guess what? I went for a 6K run this morning! It felt good to get outside and be active on the first official day of SUMMMAAAHH! Speaking of which, my summer goals are going swimmingly, but we’re not talking about that today (although look for an update soon – you’re going to be so proud).

I’m writing this post to give a little inside scoop of what I’ve been up to as of late:

Recently went to Trinity Bellwoods and had a romantic picnic with the Lotus Leaf crew. We hung out, played Cards Against Humanity and drank pitchers of yummy sangria. The perfect post-work activity. Thanks again Tori for setting all this up for us!

Earlier this week I collaborated with online shopping site “BRIKA” and DIY/lifestyle blog “My Little Secrets” to film a fun how-to video! If you’re someone who loves making super cute jewellery for the summer season, you won’t want to miss out on this one. I am editing now and hopefully it will be posted on the blog next week!

Alright, now for some big news. The reason I ran 6K this morning was because I’ve started training for my FIRST half-marathon in October! To be honest, I ran 4.5K without stopping then walked the rest because the heat was starting to beam down hard.

The whole idea of a half-marathon sounds incredibly intimidating, but I’m motivating myself to believe that in a few months it will be a piece of cake to run 22K. It’s something I’ve always wanted to accomplish but never got around to planning. UNTIL NOW! Yay! I think marathons are a great way to stay in shape, meet amazing people and be able to travel different places. In the next few years, Boston Marathon anyone? Marathon de Paris? Perhaps. One day.

Along with my new workout routine, I’m going to be even more cautious of my diet and making sure I eat as healthily as possible. Although, cheat days are and always will be acceptable.

If you have any tips or tricks on running a half-marathon, please do not hesitate to comment below! Will need all the help I can get. As always, I’ll keep you updated on my training because whether you like it or not my dear readers, you are coming on this adventure with me! 🙂

That is all for now. Have a great rest of the weekend and talk to you soon!

IT SMELLS LIKE SUMMER!

My friend Kristin once told me that she loves the smell of sunscreen because it means you’re doing something active and exciting that day, like going to the beach, a festival or any other enjoyable summer activity. If the word “fun” had a scent I’d be the pungent scent of sunscreen. If you were to creepily smell my skin right now, fun is exactly what I smell like.

I get asked all the time what sun products I love and as your uncertified beauty advisor, here are a few I use and recommend:

For my body I use Hawaiian Tropic’s Shimmer Effect, which smells like coconuts and makes your skin sparkle (as a result, would not recommend for your face). It also nicely protects and complements your limbs as you strut in the sunlight.

Hawaiian-Tropic-Shimmer-Effects-SPF15-700x1315

For my face I use Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunscreen. A scent-free option that is light-weight, waterproof and contains a high SPF.

neutrogena-ultra-sheer-dry-touch-sunblock-spf55-en

We’re all guilty of forgetting to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, and resembling a peeling lobster is not cute. If I’m outside for a long period of time and find my skin starts to feel sensitive to the touch, I’ll typically reach for aloe or Aesop’s Petitgrain Hydrating Body Gel. Meant for those who live in humid climates (like Australia, where it’s manufactured), the aloe-type gel nicely cools down your skin or you can use it for irritation after you shave or wax. The most important question, what does it smell like? Grapefruit and citrus. It’s pretty bomb.

Color Me Rad 2014

Katie, Nicole and I participated in the “Color Me Rad” 5k run on Saturday!

Here are the top moments of the day:

Got dazzled up in our RAD gear. Tattoos and sunglasses were included in our packs. Nicole provided the knee-high socks, I made us all headbands and Katie whipped up some protein pancakes that morning – they were deeeelicious!

10373773_10152488158884189_1661187064780477087_n

Warmed up before the race with a little bit of zumba.

10420014_1485579561678286_555643133631879807_n

Hilariously tripped over each other because we couldn’t see from the amount of chalk in our eyes. Also, can we acknowledge my glorious fanny pack? Pretty sure it was my dad’s in the 80’s.

10155681_1485579641678278_7537418180021432816_n

The colour stations were the best part. Casually got boxes of purple, blue and orange chalk poured over us as we ran by. Was it chalk? Baking powder with colour maybe? All I know is that it stained my tank top, even after two washes. #WorthIt

WE FINISHED THE RACE!

Running 5k was not so bad, we certainly could’ve kept going. Good job team!

10419485_1485579748344934_9086946356530265072_n

I don’t know who the person was who trusted me with this..

Is someone playing Harlem Shake?

10301937_1485579778344931_2800017359006172455_n

Post-run dance party was probably the best part.

10371413_1485581205011455_8172478419264621194_n

Had a blast at the race, plus we lucked out on having amazing weather. Also, another SUMMER GOAL is checked off. BOO-YA!

10269624_10152488158489189_3209991321038352860_n

Sat on garbage bags in the car, still managed to get colour all over the place. I guess dancing to Destiny’s Child the entire ride home didn’t help that cause either.
