Better bronzing: 5 organic and natural self-tanners that make getting a glow even safer

organic-self-tanner

Normally we would have blown through at least a few bottles of sunscreen by now, but with the constant rain and cloudiness this summer, we’ve been reaching for the self-tanner instead. Even if we aren’t busting out a bikini every weekend, we still want our limbs looking bronzed and healthy.

There is quite the range of self tanner options available that offer different finishes depending on your skin tone and the level of bronze you’re looking for. But what we’re fixated on right now is growing number of natural and organic tanners geared toward those of us who want to green our beauty routine.

While faux glow and all-natural products may not seem like the most obvious pairing, it’s one that makes sense. After all, if you’re avoiding damage from the sun, it’s just as important to avoid the harmful chemicals and additives that many self-tanners can contain. But before we share our paraben- and silicone-free picks, some self-tanning 101: don’t forget to exfoliate. We can’t stress enough how important it is to polish your skin before you apply any self tanner—it will be the difference between achieving a gorgeous golden versus blotchy butterscotch.

Wake Me Up – Avicii

I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
I hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don’t have any plans
Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life’s a game made for everyone
And love is the prize

Weddingbells Fall/Winter ’13 & FASHION August ’13

There’s no other feeling like seeing your work and name published inside a magazine.

Weddingbells F/W ’13 issue came out this month and I can’t believe how amazing it turned out! Not that I’m surprised, the team was awesome to work with and they’re all super talented. I worked on two photoshoots as a style assistant (and drooled over all the pretty dresses), wrote a national wedding and various other real weddings – all published in this issue! It’s so, so beautiful. I seriously almost cried of happiness. You should pick up a copy, it’s 422 pages of magic.

FASHION August ’13 issue with Demi Lovato also came out this month. I truly hope that feeling of accomplishment and seeing my name published never gets old.

What Would You Say?

large (2)

I’d like to think I give pretty good advice. At least, that’s what my friends tell me. I always have something to say in every situation, whether it’s positive or giving some tough love. Even if I don’t have proper advice, I crack out my cheesy jokes and I can at least make them laugh. Or, I’ll get them ice cream, because everyone is happy when they have ice cream.

I may not have been through a whole lot to know exactly how a person is feeling in certain situations, but I think I’m pretty good at getting inside their head and figuring out how to fix it or what to say to make them realize that not everything is lost.

Until the other day.

I was with my friend and he opened up to me in a way I never thought he would. He told me the saddest, most heartbreaking story about what’s going on in his life. Everything I thought was tough in my own life went right out the window. When he finished talking, I just stared at him. I was literally speechless. I took a deep breath to talk, but nothing came out. No advice. No cheesy joke. No words of comfort. At that moment, nothing could be said. He knew it. I knew it. It was silent for what seemed like half an hour, when really, it was probably a minute.

So, what do you say when nothing can be said?

You’d think being a journalism major I’d have a plethora of words I can string together to create a sentence to break the silence. But, after a moment all I said was, “I’m sorry.” Which had more than one definition. Sorry he was going through a tough time. And sorry I had nothing to say.

In a way, it was almost…..peaceful. He seemed better after the silence, like everything happening in his life was just shut off for that brief minute. As if the silence was, oddly, the best advice I’ve ever given.

Special Thanks From A University of Toronto Graduate

I feel incredibly happy and proud for surviving the past four and a half years. I’ve had such an amazing experience at U of T and I’m so lucky to have had unbelievable support.

My graduation ceremony was surprisingly well organized (it was only an hour) and our speaker, Tanya Mars, kept her speech short, sweet, and inspirational. The day was perfect to reunite with old friends and to officially have that expensive piece of paper in my hands.

HONOURS BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE! *happy dance, happy dance, happy dance*

I want to send one last thank you to everyone who have made my university experience incredible:

– My loving family for dealing with my stress and mood swings during exam time. Also, big thank you for my parents for driving me to school every morning (special thanks to my mom for screaming “I LOVE YOU! HAVE A GREAT DAY!” every time I walked out of the car).

– My friends, there are so many of you, I don’t know where to start. Thank you to those who endured countless hours in the library with me, for pouring me a drink when school got tough and those special few who I’ve had late night conversations with about our future and promised each other, no matter what, we will always support one another.

– My soccer and hockey teammates and coaches. THANK YOU! I can never explain my gratitude and how much you all truly made my university experience unforgettable. The crazy practice schedules and intense game play aside, I made SO many great friends (rookie nights will always be the best nights) and I want to thank you all for pushing me and getting me back into shape! Also, thank you to the countless bus drivers who drove us to our games and whoever had to wash our jerseys (you’re a brave, brave soul).

– My professors, thank you. To my drama teachers for believing in my weirdness on and off stage. To me English teachers for forcing me to read literature I thought I’d never enjoy (English Civil War Literature and Native North American Literature especially). Journalism teachers, you were tough. You were hard on all of us with tight deadlines and high expectations. Thank you. You taught me all I needed to know for the real world and even though I have left countless number of tears in the newsroom, thank you for your criticism and hard work. Every assignment made me a stronger journalist and I have no one but you all to thank.

– Finally, I’d like to thank my MacBook Pro. You made my student life so much easier when it came to class notes and assignments. Thank you for supporting my procrastination when you thought I should slow my life down, for staying up with me and never over-heating or dying. Oh, and for dealing with ROSI (U of T people know who), she can be unfair sometimes but we made it through together.

Alright, I believe that’s all who I wanted to thank.

U of T is such an amazing institution (no wonder we’re the best in Canada) and I’m proud to say I’m officially an alumni! YAHOO! 🙂

XO

Jessica
